Take a walk with us, back in time

The Rutland Arms Hotel in Bakewell is a true gem nestled in the heart of Derbyshire’s Peak District. Built in 1804 for the 5th Duke of Rutland, this elegant Georgian coaching inn was part of a grand vision to elevate Bakewell’s status, rivaling nearby spa towns. Its stately sandstone façade and Doric-columned entrance exude timeless charm, while the interior boasts period features like sash windows and ornate fireplaces.

The hotel’s history is as rich as its architecture. In the early 19th century, it served as a bustling hub for travelers, with stables accommodating up to 60 horses, a testament to its prominence on the coaching routes. The Greaves family managed the inn for nearly a century, contributing to its legacy.

Notably, the Rutland Arms is linked to the creation of the famous Bakewell Pudding. Around 1860, a cook’s serendipitous mistake led to the invention of this delightful dessert, now synonymous with the town.

There’s also a charming and debated connection to Jane Austen. Some believe she stayed here in 1811 and drew inspiration from the surroundings for “Pride and Prejudice,” with Bakewell and nearby Chatsworth House influencing the novel’s settings.

Today, the Rutland Arms continues to welcome guests, blending historical elegance with modern comforts. Whether you’re indulging in a Bakewell Pudding or exploring the scenic Peak District, a stay here offers a delightful journey through time.
